Ann Taylor 1831 – PDF Download
$24.00

Ann Taylor 1831 is a reproduction sampler that preserves the quiet charm of a nineteenth-century schoolgirl’s work. Ann completed her sampler on July 15, 1831, at just nine years old, carefully stitching rows of alphabets, numerals, narrow decorative bands, and small motifs before signing the piece with her name, age, and date. The result is both orderly and personal, a simple record of a young girl practicing the skills that formed an important part of her education.

The sampler includes several styles of lettering, separated by traditional bands and borders, with small motifs such as a basket, flower, heart, and bird worked into the design. Its restrained palette of rust, green, brown, blue, and ecru gives the piece the warm, aged character of an early nineteenth-century sampler while allowing the lettering and decorative details to remain the focus.

This listing is for a digital PDF cross stitch chart. No physical product will be mailed.

Alice Harcourt 1852 – PDF Download
$12.00

Alice Harcourt 1852 is a beautiful sampler with a story to tell. Dating to December 9, 1852, the original piece has survived for more than 170 years, although time has not been particularly kind to it. Much of the original needlework has deteriorated, and a large portion of the upper right corner was torn away and lost. Despite the damage, Alice's name and the date she completed her work remain clearly visible, preserving a small but meaningful connection to the young girl who stitched it so many years ago.

When I began recreating Alice's sampler, I wanted to preserve as much of the original design as possible. However, because significant portions of the needlework were missing, an exact reproduction was impossible. I carefully studied the surviving stitches, motifs, colors, and overall arrangement, drawing upon the traditions of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century schoolgirl needlework to imagine how the missing sections might originally have appeared.

The resulting design is a combination of historical preservation and thoughtful interpretation. Traditional alphabets and numbers, birds, evergreen trees, flowering plants, and baskets of blossoms are arranged within a delicate geometric border, all worked in the beautiful red and green colors so characteristic of early needlework.

Although this sampler began as an effort to reproduce an original piece from 1852, the extensive reconstruction required a considerable amount of creative interpretation. For that reason, Alice Harcourt 1852 is classified as an original design rather than a faithful reproduction. My hope has been to honor the character of Alice's surviving work while giving new life to a sampler that might otherwise have been lost to time.

It is a pleasure to share Alice's needlework with a new generation of stitchers, and I hope you will enjoy bringing her sampler to life once again, one stitch at a time.

Walter Bramley 1836 – PDF Download
$12.00

Step back into the world of nineteenth-century needlework with Walter Bramley 1836, an original design from Red House Needleworks inspired by the rare and fascinating tradition of samplers stitched by boys.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sampler making was largely associated with the education of young girls, who learned needlework as both a practical skill and an artistic accomplishment. Although considerably less common, boys sometimes stitched samplers as well. These surviving examples offer a fascinating glimpse into a lesser-known chapter of needlework history and are particularly treasured by collectors today.

Walter Bramley 1836 celebrates this uncommon tradition with a charming collection of motifs reminiscent of early nineteenth-century samplers. A bold alphabet and numbers are accompanied by sailing ships, an anchor, geometric ornaments, and other delightful figures, all stitched in a single rich shade of red. The nautical motifs are especially fitting, recalling the ships and maritime imagery sometimes found in historical boys' samplers.

With its traditional composition, simple color palette, and distinctive character, Walter Bramley 1836 is a wonderful project for stitchers who appreciate antique needlework, historical samplers, and the stories behind the stitches.
